Chapter 1: The Basis of Islam
In Islam, tawakkul is placing complete trust in Allah. It is a core aspect of faith that brings peace, resilience, and clarity to a believer’s life. It’s more than just hoping for the best; it’s an active reliance on Allah’s wisdom and mercy, coupled with sincere effort. Tawakkul teaches us to navigate life’s uncertainties with the assurance that whatever unfolds is part of a divine plan, designed with infinite knowledge and love.
1. The Essence of Tawakkul in the Quran and Hadith
The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of trusting Allah:
“And whoever relies upon Allah — then He is sufficient for him.” (Surah At-Talaq 65:3)
This verse reassures believers that placing trust in Allah provides ultimate sufficiency. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) further illustrated this concept, saying:
"If you were to rely upon Allah with the reliance He is due, you would be given provision like the birds: they go out in the morning hungry and return with full bellies." (Tirmidhi)
This hadith shows that tawakkul doesn’t mean passivity. The birds don’t stay in their nests expecting food; they venture out, doing their part, while trusting Allah to provide.
3 Ways to Acquire Tawakkul:
Dua : Regularly pray for guidance, strength, and reliance on Allah.
Dhikr : Engage in remembrance to calm the heart and reinforce trust in Allah’s presence.
Letting Go of Control: Remind yourself that control lies with Allah, you should do your part, but release the weight of what’s beyond your power.
